Several moderately-sized privately-owned properties are located mauka of the highway and upslope of the bay in the valley formed by the Honolua Stream. Some of the properties are developed with single- family homes.

The water is also very murky at the shoreline, so you need to swim a bit out for good visibility – combined with parking that is further away than many other snorkel locations – Honolua Bay isn't a “drive-by” snorkel. ... Snorkeling & diving are to be avoided in such surf conditions.

The name “Slaughterhouse Beach” comes from the Honolua Ranch slaughterhouse and tanning/storage shed that were (oh, so conveniently) located on the cliff's edge above the ocean. The buildings were torn down in the 60's, but the lovely name stuck.

Honolua Bay

This is a fun place to check out even if you don't snorkel because you have to walk through a “jungle” to get to the water. What I call a “jungle walk” is the best part especially if you have kids with you. There are wild chickens, streams and hanging branches.

Re: What time of day to snorkel Honolua? If there isn't a swell... Honolua tends to be calm all day. I prefer early before tours arrive (8:30) or later after they have left 2/2:30.

Honolua Bay is surrounded by high rocky cliffs on both sides that shelter it from the wind and keep the water calm. An old cement boat ramp in the center of the beach divides the shoreline in two. To get here from Lahaina or Kaanapali, head north on the Honoapiilani Highway until you get close to Kapalua. Make a left turn onto Napilihau Street at the set of lights. Follow this street to the end where you'll make a right turn onto Lower Honoapiilani Road.Jun 27, 2015

Olowalu Beach

Parking: Once you are near Mile Marker 14, park on the ocean side of Honoapiilani Highway with your car facing the ocean. Make sure you do not park in soft sand – it can be very hard to get your car out. As soon as you get out of the car and into the sunshine, you've found Olowalu; it is right before you.

It's possible to get to Oneloa Beach by bus. There's a bus that goes to Kapalua. It's about a 10 minute walk from the nearest bus stop to Ironwoods parking lot for the start of the beach path.Nov 10, 2020

From the northern part of Front Street in Lahaina, turn your car toward the ocean onto Ala Moana Street. Bear left at the fork. It's rare to find an unoccupied beach in south Maui, but that's just what is likely to happen when you visit Po'olenalena (also known as Paipu Beach, Pepeiaolepo Beach, Love Beach, Keauhou Beach or Makena Surf Beach). Po'olenalena is excellent for swimming since its sandy shores slope gently into the water.

So as it stands, there have been 6-7 deadly shark attacks in Hawaii since 2004, with Maui being the deadliest island in Hawaii for shark attacks. Scientists say it's not a coincidence that Maui sees more shark attacks. They say Hawaii sharks like the ocean environment of Maui's shores.

When to Visit

This is because these majestic sea creatures are most active in warmer, gentler water. During the cooler months, the waves become stronger and less hospitable for the turtles. The best time of day to view the turtles is between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., but just before sunset is a good time to visit, too.

Mahaulepu is a two mile car trip from the end of Poipu Road. Travel east on the dirt cane field road to the main cane haul road intersection and turn right. There will be a security shack posting beach opening and closing hours. Beach access closes at 6pm.
