After that it became part of the United States. Mission Santa Clara gained a new purpose in 1851, when it became the site of the first college in the new state of California. It is now Santa Clara University. The mission church serves as its chapel.

Mission Santa Clara de Asis is located on the campus of Santa Clara University at 500 El Camino Real. The present building is an enlarged replica of the original church built on this site in 1822. In 1926, the old Mission Church was destroyed by fire.

First established in 1777, the Franciscan Order handed the Mission over to the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1851, who then started Santa Clara College, the first institution of higher education in California.

Facade is painted with images of St. Clare, Francis and John the Baptist. After the cornerstone ceremony, work began on the new church. It was completed 2 1/2 years later, in May 1784.

A wooden facade was built over the old adobe one, and a second bell tower was built. The fifth church was destroyed by fire in 1926. The university rebuilt the church, trying to restore it to the way it looked in 1825. The restored church was completed in 1928.Jun 6, 2019
